Barcelona Collection

From his work on the German Pavilion in Barcelona, the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic, the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Seagram’s building in New York and the Farnsworth House Illinois, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe defined an architectural vocabulary for the modern world in terms that are clear and honest. He approached furniture design with the same philosophy of “no trivial decoration”. After immigrating to the United States in 1937, Mies van der Rohe formed a lasting friendship with a young student, Florence Knoll, who in 1953 acquired exclusive rights to produce the Barcelona Collection. Knoll subsequently procured the remainder of Miles’ furniture designs, pieces that have taken their place among the most profoundly original furniture designs of the twentieth century. The Mies van der Rohe Collection reflects the KnollStudio commitment to timeless, enduring design, continuing the Knoll legacy of producing furniture to the exacting standards the designer and affirming our unwavering belief in the power and utility of modern design.
